registration fees. Other costs associated with attendance at
training, eg. transport and accommodation (if necessary) are the
responsibility of the agency or staff member.
Who is eligible to attend NEVIL
training?
Staff employed by the six area mental health services that comprise
the NEVIL cluster are eligible to attend NEVIL training. The
services are: Austin Health, Eastern Health, Forensicare, St.
Vincent's Health, Goulburn Valley Health and North East Victorian
Mental Health Service (encompassing Wangaratta, Beechworth and
Wodonga). Staff from the Western and Southern clusters may
attend some training events by prior arrangement. Cluster

public area mental health services.
How do I register to attend
training?
Registration is necessary to attend NEVIL training.
A registration form is available from many places of this website.
Each participant is to complete and return the registration form via
email or fax (details on the form) to request attendance at a

Introduction to
Dual Diagnosis
‘Dual Diagnosis’ or

mental disorders and substance use disorders. Dual diagnosis is the
norm amongst mental health services; therefore dual diagnosis is

workshop will assist the mental health worker to identify, assess
and develop treatment plans for these patients.
At the end
of this workshop participants should be able to:
-
Describe the
prevalence of dual diagnosis;
-
Utilise a
screening tool to identify those with a dual diagnosis;
-
Develop skills
and strategies to engage clients in the treatment of their drug
use;
-
Identify
similarities and difference between mental health and AOD
treatment philosophies; and
-
Identify a
range of professional development opportunities to increase
their capacity to work with patients with dual diagnosis.

Early Intervention
in Borderline Personality Disorder (for CAMHS staff)
This workshop will cover how to deliver best-practice
services to youth presenting with emerging PD. It focuses upon
Borderline PD (BPD) and presents the work of the Helping Young
People Early (HYPE) clinic at ORYGEN Youth Health. This service has
been successfully delivering early intervention for youth with BPD
since 1999. The effectiveness of this approach is supported by
randomised controlled trial evidence. Case material, role-plays and
discussion will be used to ensure participants have the opportunity
to reflect upon the barriers and challenges associated with
delivering best practice services to this group of young people.
Participants will also have opportunities to practice techniques
used to manage challenges, such as the assessment and management of
deliberate self-harm.
Training objectives will include:
- To understand the rationale for early intervention in BPD
- To understand how to assess BPD in youth
- To understand specific interventions for BPD and associated
problems in youth
- To assess and manage chronic and acute risk of self-harm
- To distinguish the factors that can interfere with treating BPD
in youth
- To consider clinicians’ own clinical practice with young people
with BPD features

Applied Suicide
Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
ASIST moves beyond suicide awareness to
help participants develop practical knowledge and skills in how to
recognise and respond to a person at risk and link them to further
help. A simple three step model is described, following which video
vignettes are discussed. Evidence-based risk factors are examined
in turn and each risk factor is addressed with a “safe plan”
response. Day 2 comprises involvement in role plays and concludes
with each participant participating in a suicide intervention. The
Living Works ASIST suicide intervention model is one of the most
widely used suicide intervention training programs in the world.

Advanced Issues in
Clinical Supervision (Phase 3)
This three-day
workshop will enable mental health clinicians to critically evaluate
their clinical supervision practices
and
refine their application of theoretical and experiential gains.
There is time allocated for each participant to explore a
supervision “moment” where they want to further integrate
supervision theory and explore and refresh their attitudes and
skills.
At the end of this
workshop, participants will be able to:
-
critically
analyse and evaluate their own style(s) in the clinical
supervision process;
-
place their
particular styles in broader theoretical contexts; and
-
examine means
of promoting clinical supervision throughout their services.

Mindfulness- Based
Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
This is an opportunity for clinicians to develop skills and
knowledge in Mindfulness- Based Cognitive Therapy through direct
experience. Because MBCT involves meditation skills, clinicians will
have considerable opportunity to practise the skills and to discuss
their reactions within the sessions. The group aims to cover the key
concepts of MBCT, which can then be applied in clinical work
settings and in personal life experiences.
Some of the skills learned within the group include:
-
Learning
strategies to step out of self perpetuating cognitive routines
-
Developing a
different relationship with thoughts, emotions and bodily
sensations and becoming mindfully aware
-
Learning how
attachment and aversion drive our thinking patterns
-
Developing
awareness of bodily manifestations of problems
-
Developing your
own ongoing practice
N.B Participants
are encouraged to bring their own yoga mat or blanket for use in the
sessions.
Date:
Thursdays
10.00 am - 11.30am. Commencing 9th October
to 27th November for 8 weeks

Personality Disorders in People with Intellectual Disability
Personality Disorders (PD) are potentially severe and disabling
conditions causing significant distress for the individual and
severely challenging service providers. Research suggests that this
population are at increased risk of these disorders but diagnosis of
PD in people with intellectual disability is controversial.
Personality disorder does however provide a basis for decisions on
type and intensity of support required for this population who have
significant levels of unmet need.
The workshop will focus on the presentation, assessment, management
and treatment of personality disorder in people with intellectual
disability, drawing upon the current therapeutic models and
theoretical principles that have been developed for this particular
population.

Date: Early April 2009
Venue: Metro

Screening &
Assessment of substance use
In Victoria, as in
other parts of the world, mental health services are working with
increasing numbers of people who are experiencing both mental health
and substance use disorders. Often the substance use is
unrecognised or under-reported and patients needs go unaddressed or
receive inappropriate treatment.
This one-day
workshop will introduce mental health workers to the issue of
screening for substance use disorders within the Victorian context
and aligns with the expectations for dual diagnosis service
development from Department of Human Services.
At the end of this
workshop participants will be able to:
-
Explain the
rationale for universal screening of clients for substance use
-
Appraise the
various screening tools available
-
Implement a
screening tool and interpret the outcome
-
Develop
clinical pathways for clients
-
Provide brief
interventions for clients
