The aim of the workshop is for AMHS staff to understand the difficulties in the assessment of people with intellectual disability and how to address these.
Participants will review definitions of intellectual disability and examine why there is a high prevalence of mental disorders in this group with a focus on serious mental illness. They will also consider the role of the Area mental health service in relation to this population and learn how the presentation of mental illness can be different in this population and what adjustments in practice can be made to account for this.
The workshop will employ a variety of learning strategies including lectures, exercises and discussions based on case examples and requires attendees to actively contribute and participate.
