Preceptorship

Details As nurse and health professionals we have an important role in providing support, education and training opportunities to new and junior staff. This professional development course is aimed at helping those who are not clinical educators, or staff development personnel or university lecturers. It is aimed primarily at nurses in busy jobs who are willing to effectively introduce new people or students into the workplace, who are grateful to have new members of staff and want to make the best use of the little time they have in helping those people to settle in and become effective care givers in a new environment. (Eastern health training manual) This one day workshop will be suitable for all staff that do or are likely to provide support to new staff within the workplace whether they are undergraduate or post graduate staff or staff new to that clinical area. It will look at the roles and expectations of the preceptor and the preceptee. Adult learning styles will be discussed as will competency assessments as based on the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) competencies. The afternoon will break into group work looking at some common scenarios Learning outcomes: 1. For attendees to feel more comfortable and confident in working as preceptors with students, graduate nurses and new staff 2.
