Details
Clients of public area mental health services often also present with a range of physical health issues. The assessment and management of these physical health issues by mental health staff is vital to the desired holistic approach which our clients deserve. The aim of this two day workshop is to enhance the knowledge and skills of registered nurses to undertake physical health assessment of clients in the mental health setting. This two day seminar will cover: Introduction to health assessment; data collection - medical history; physical health assessment techniques; abdominal assessment and disorders; fluid balance assessment and electrolyte disturbance; renal assessment and failure; diabetes management; an introduction to pain assessment and management; assessment of muscular-skeletal disorders; and cardiac and respiratory disorders. Following participation in this course the RN will be able to: • Utilise a structured problem solving process for physical health assessment. • Use appropriate systematic questions for performing a physical assessment. • Identify and address issues of consent and confidentiality. • Demonstrate skills in accessing and analysing pathology results (Orion). • To gather objective data, report and document findings based on the history and physical assessment. • Demonstrate systematic techniques of physical health examination utilising inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation. • Undertake head to toe assessment, report and document results.
