Preceptorship

Details A preceptor is an experienced clinician who provides support and guidance to other nurses (preceptees) during clinical placement. Preceptors may also provide transitional support to new graduates and staff members within their health care agency. Becoming and being a good preceptor requires special skills that will be covered in this workshop. Upon completion of this workshop participants should be able to: • Define the notion of preceptorship and differentiate between the roles of preceptor and preceptee; • Differentiate between, preceptorship, clinical supervision and mentoring; • Develop and practice preceptorship skills; • Identify the assumptions that underpin adult learning; • Identify the different generational styles and how they may impact on preceptor and preceptee roles; • Differentiate between the learning needs of student nurses, graduate nurses and registered nurses; • Outline the responsibility of the preceptee; • Outline assessment processes as they pertain to the preceptor; • Identify specific considerations related to a clinical mental health context.
