Families where a Parent Has a Mental Illness

This workshop comprises two sessions, one in the morning, the second in the afternoon.  The first session will address best practice tools to engage consumer parents around parenting issues and the needs of their children. Participants will achieve the following outcomes from this component of the workshop:

Have confidence to engage consumer parents in conversations around parenting

Have confidence to engage consumer parents in conversations around the needs of their children; and

Have a working knowledge of resources and tools to support consumer parents and their children.

In the afternoon, the second session will address best practice tools to engage children of parents with mental illness in conversations about the impact of their parents’ mental illness on them.  At the completion of this component of the workshop, participants will:

 Have confidence to engage with and talk to children of consumer parents about the impact of mental illness on their lives;

Have the skills and knowledge to give age appropriate information about mental illness; and

Have confidence to support children’s expression of how it is for them.
