OT Specific Study Day: Introduction to DBT for OTs: Working towards a life worth living for people with BPD

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an internationally recognised evidence based treatment for people experiencing symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and / or high risk suicidal and non-suicidal self-injurious (NSSI) behaviours. This therapy approach is a skills based treatment, which aligns extremely well with Occupational Therapy (OT) models of practise. This workshop aims to highlight the synthesis of OT and DBT in the Australian public mental health context.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understanding the diagnostic overview of Emotion Dysregulation and Biosocial theory of BPD.
  2. Have a working understanding of the DBT model including the Transactional Model
  3. Application of Sensory Modulation within the lens of the DBT skillsets
  4. Understanding the function of behaviours (functions of NSSI)
  5. Understanding of how relevant OT models can enhance our knowledge of emotion dysregulation, and help work towards the ultimate goal of a life worth living.
